Scary Iguana...

Also known as... "When good iguanas go bad."
Or... "how to defend your territory in 10 easy steps."
It all started out rather quietly.
Two iguanas, one desired territory.
They approach...

They posture and hiss...

One backs off, the other boasts a bit...

The loser decides to try again and something like this happens.

That wasn't so bad, but then someone gets mad!

And it's all down hill from there.

Ignore the squeals and such.   We were quite surprised by all the violence.
The battle went on for quite some time.
Fortunately for us, we had front row seats on a nearby picnic table and were able to watch the show in relative comfort.
(Shade is good and so is a really long lens!)
We got tired long before the iguanas did.
Just as we were packing up to leave a Military Policeman came by and broke up the fight
(It's good to know that the MP's have a use other than making sure no one was breaking the 25mph speed limit.)
I guess we'll never know who the victor would have been.

I took a LOT of pictures.
These are just a few of my favorite action shots.
Sorry if this post is picture overload!

Ohmygoodness!

I didn't watch the videos because my satellite internet really crawls this time of night, but those last shots of them flipping through the air... wow!

Wow those iguana smackdown stills are pretty amazing. They really are like little dinosaurs aren't they?

Amazing shots! What entertainment for your picnic. I think it is hilarious that the MP broke up this fight. What will he/she way when asked, 'Honey, what did you do at work today?"

These photos are great! I don't understand why one of them wouldn't back down or walk away, but the captures you got (and video) are amazing!

It's like the WWF of the iguana world and you were in the thick of it!!! Who knew?! I certainly didn't realize that iguanas were such tough guys- here I thought they just lounged around in the sun all day.

I'm not going to lie to you.... I shed some tears when I saw the blood. It's like one's a bully and the other iguana just wants to eat his school lunch without being picked on. Why can't iguanas all just get along? :0)
