What's so special about my town?

Over at Yellow House, we were asked,
"What makes your town unique?"

Well... truth is...
The actual town that I live in is pretty much boring.
There is nothing particularly unique or interesting about it and I tried to come up with something.

I really did.

But it's mostly suburbia on steroids, full of cookie cutter houses and strip malls full of chain restaurants and box stores.

However, just a 15-20 minute drive will get me to this location.
Manassas, VA.
The location of the Battle of Bull Run.

The first time we visited there, we took some time to check out the visitors center.
They have a large map display with lights that light up to show you the advancement of the troops.
The confederates were the red lights, the union troops were blue.

(Here's where I mention that both my husband and I are from Northern states.
Here's also the part where I offend any of my Southern readers.)

I didn't know that my Northern roots had extended through my children until Grant asked me which lights represented which army.
"The blue is the north and the red is the south."
"Oh," he says loudly, "So the blue is the good guys!"
I clamped my hand over his mouth so fast and whispered,
"Be quiet!  You're going to get us killed!"

Did I mention that my town is home to the NRA's  National Firearms Museum?

Ok, I seriously laughed out loud! My family is from the south (blink and you miss it small town in Arkansas) and Guadalajara Mexico. I grew up here in Michigan. I think I may have said something to that effect when I was younger and my great grams was royally offended. Ha! Out of the mouth of babes, eh?

Can I request that you have your readers do a post about this? You could set up a MckLinky. It would be fun to read everyone's posts!

By the way...I agree with Grant.

(oops...did I say that out loud?) :)

Ha ha! Suburbia on steroids. Reminds me of the TV show Weeds. Have you seen it?

Hmm... NRA museum. I might skip that. BUT... your photo makes me want to do a little Civil War recreation. Beautiful shot!

Terri - You should come over to my blog and link up your town too!

I enjoyed reading this post!

It amazes me how the Civil War seems to live on much more in the South than it does in the North...but perhaps that's just my imagination.

Last weekend I was at a fort commemorating the War of 1812, so I guess that war lives on as well.

hahahahahahaha ... the South will rise again!

oh man ... I dated way too many rednecks so I just have to throw that in. one guy had a full Confederate flag in his room! (oh yeah..I'm from Alabama, lol!)

Wonderful picture! I love the way the light shines into the frame.
