Ever wonder why they call it the birds and the bees?

So we have this bird....

We got him just about a year ago.

I don't know what possessed me.
We were at the fair and the girls were looking longingly at the parakeets for sale.
They hadn't even really asked me, but I knew...

I knew that they wanted a pet parakeet.
So before I could stop myself, I said, "Yes."

They were stunned.

So was I.

I don't even like birds...
I mean wild birds outside are cool,
but birds in the house?  Not so much...

I really hate those bird feeding exhibits at zoos.... ugh... shiver.

What was I thinking?

But he turned out to be pretty cool.
We fed him and loved him and called him George Mr. Abotty.

At Christmas time he tweeted along to "All I want for Christmas..."
That was amusing.

 He had a favorite toy.

A bell

He'd hit the bell with his beak, jump to another perch, come back and hit the bell some more.

As time progressed he'd ring that bell more and more and more often.
We joked and called it his girlfriend.

We didn't know how right we were.
A couple of months ago, it seems that our baby bird has come into his maturity.

And lately he's been... ahem... taking advantage of the poor bell.
(At least that's what he seemed to be doing... I'm no expert on birdie sex.)

It was weird and it kind of grossed me out.

The rythmic "ding ding ding ding ding ding ding" was more than I could handle.

I understand that a bird has needs... but I really don't want to hear it.
So, after a rather vigorous bell ringing session, I had had enough!

"Get that bell out of that cage!"
I'm sorry, Mr. Abotty, but your girlfriend has left you.

We've replaced the bell with a mirror.

I'm not sure that he's fallen in love with himself, but at least if he does, it will be far quieter!

Photobucket

Yes... I do have a couple of archived photos here... but I needed them.

He's so cute! He looks like the parakeet we had last year but he died after a short week! We went and got another one about a year ago and it's blue and we just love it! It's our easiest pet yet!

So funny about the bell! I think the mirror was a good choice :) GREAT shots!!

What gorgeous pictures! He’s a very pretty bird. That poor bell! What a hilarious story, I don’t blame you for giving him a mirror instead.

I had a light blue parakeet once that slept hanging upside down like a bat! They definitely have personalities.

I'm glad you're liking him, I wouldn't be able to do a bird. We have a hamster and that's good enough for now! HA!

Love the reflection shot. :)

Oh my goodness Colleen, this is hilarious. The way you write draws us right into the story. The next time I hear a bell ringing I'm going to die of laughter and everyone will think I'm crazy!

Now, there is chicken sex going on around here all the time, and I really don't think much of it anymore! :)

That brought back terrifyingly vivid images of a parakeet I had as a kid who was the most annoying and noisy animal ever created. I'm not (usually) a mean person but I used to wish he would croak. We eventually gave him away to a family of bird lovers. As I am predominantly a cat lover, this was in *everyone's* best interests. Now? I'm just afraid of birds. They give me the heebie-jeebies. Good luck with your randy bird!

That was too cute! And funny - we had a parakeet, same coloring, that lived in a cage, that looked exactly like yours. Love that last picture!!

Very cute and interesting story and great photos. I loved every facet of your 'animals' post. AND, your Mr. Abotty has exceptionally beautiful coloring.

LOL! Yes, the mirror will be quieter. He's a pretty bird! I love birds, when I was growing up we had zebra finches and they had babies and it was so fun! What I don't like it the mess of birds. So I don't have any and recently I babysat my daughter's parakeet and was reminded once again of why I don't have birds, lol.

When you started saying had I was afraid he had died, good to know only his babyhood died.

Well he's a beautiful bird but you'd have to check my brain out if I brought home a bird...seems noisy and messy. But after reading this post, I may consider - okay, maybe not, but I loved this post.

I loved the story and I loved the video. He's cute, and I hope he likes his reflection in the mirror as much as I do! My father used to keep parakeets when I was a kid, I always thought they were fun!

Hilarious. And so cute--makes kind of want to squeeze him. But that would be bad.
