Macro Monday: Great Falls edition

I have so many blog post ideas running around in my head that it's hard to keep up.
Fortunately, with Macro Monday being a specific date and topic, this one was easy for me to whip up!

On New Year's Day we went to Great Falls National Park.
Although the major attraction there is the waterfall,
it also provided me with many macro photo ops.

Now, you'll have to forgive me for not being able to tell you exactly what these subjects are.
I haven't taken the time to look them up and to learn more about them,
mostly I just said, "Oooooh, pretty!"
Like this little bit of moss which was slightly smaller than the size of a dime.

A shot of the same moss, just further out.

These fungi were lined up in nice neat little rows on many of the parks fallen logs.

Who knew you could find so many fun guys out in the park?

Do you like the lichen?
(Oh, dear.... I must be tired.  That was just too lame!)

There wasn't much green to be found on that cold winter's day,
but this fern seems to have retained it's color.

See the world in a whole new way at Lisa's Macro Mondays.

A great start to a new year

After a late night of games and merriment and a morning of sleeping in, we decided that we could all use a bit of fresh air,
so we took off for one of the DC area's favorite getaways,
Great Falls National Park.

We've been there in the spring and the fall, but this is the highest we've ever seen the water.

Fortunately, the water wasn't quite as high as it could have been!

J has been enjoying her time visiting with cousins, playing hide and seek and american girls, but it was nice for them to be able to get out and burn off some of that excess energy.

Well... maybe not all the excess energy!

The way was wet and mushy, but we enjoyed the brisk winter air.
A wonderful beginning to 2010.

Happy New Year!

I'm thankful for...

The perfect fall weather!!

We took a trip out to Great Falls again.
This time we took a little time to check out the trails.

I took this opportunity to take some close ups and to play with the light from the setting sun.

This guy was not what I would call a willing participant in this photo shoot, but I kept trying to get just the right shot. When he was done, he let me know by jumping onto my arm. That pretty much ended it for me!

I put a few more pictures up on facebook. (It's easier to upload the pics there.)

More Wildlife in Great Falls VA

Bambi!!
We saw this little guy lying in the grass just a few yards from the walkway. Momma was nowhere to be seen , but we are hoping that she'll be back for her baby soon.

This was at Great Falls National Park. The visitor center called it the Niagra of the South, but I think that's a rather bold claim. It was a pretty place and beside the deer, we also saw a lot of Great Blue Herons. I've never seen so many in one place before!

Grant wasn't as miserable as he looks, he just hasn't been willing to give me a full braces smile.
