This land is your land...

Julia recorded this video on Mother's Day, the same day as the other one that I posted earlier. Beside hearing and seeing Julia, I like that our normal life is going on around her as she plays. Quincy and Grant both walk through in the background and I yell up the stairs to remind everyone to get ready for church.

Renaissance Fair

Now that the school year is nearly over, it seems like every teacher is trying to fit in one last field trip or big project. This "Renaissance Fair" presentation was one of the bigger and more complicated ones and boy! are we glad to be done with it! Since the kids were working with another student, the most difficult aspect of it was just finding the time for them to work together. They needed to have a presentation, a poster board and a 3-D representation of their topic.
Grant and Tre decided on Secular Music in the Renaissance. They made a paper mache lute and Grant played Greensleeves on the piano as part of his presentation.
Quincy and Tiffany's project was on the art of Leonardo da Vinci. Tiffany dressed up as the man himself and Quincy was the Mona Lisa. Their 3-D presentations were paintings of Julia done in the style of da Vinci since they just couldn't quite reproduce one of his actual paintings. (These are technically only 2-D, but I think they won't get marked down for that.)

Julia's birthday party

Julia had her birthday party yesterday with eight of her friends from school. We decorated picture frames and played games. I'm exhausted now, but I think she had fun, so it was worth it. Next week, for Julia's real birthday, things will be much more low key.

Take me out to the ballgame

Julia took a few videos of herself playing the piano. I love watching her face as she plays and the way she interacts with the camera.

concerto romantique 1st movement part 1

The following videos encompass the complete version of Concerto Romantique played by Grant. The first video was recorded by Julia, the second one Grant recorded by setting it on the side of the piano, and the last few were recorded by me. I like that you are able to see different views while he plays... his hands, his face, his whole body which shows his pedaling, and a more standard upper body view.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Fashion Show

Julia came running up the stairs today shouting "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Fashion Show!!"
This is what she was wearing when she arrived.

I know, I know... I probably shouldn't even have plastic bags in my house. It shows how many times I have run into a store only to realize that my environmentally friendly, but incredibly elusive reusable bags were still somewhere in the car, probably under a couple of jackets, an old granola bar wrapper, and someone's incredibly important homework sheet that was due yesterday. But, in my defense, the blue one showed up in my mail box for a food drive. Guess we wont be putting any food in that bag.

A food for the hungry tank top.

Take me to Target tube top.

Old lady in babushka and vest.

Isn't there some kind of warning against allowing children to put plastic bags on their heads? Ooops!

Missouri photos

EXTRA EXTRA...Japan Surrenders !!!

Well actually..it was almost 63 years ago. But hey, history is cool so I took the opportunity while in Hawaii this past week to visit the battleship USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor. The "Mighty Mo" was the scene of the surrender ceremony by the Empire of Japan to the Allied Powers on September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay. Two years ago, Kevin and Grant and I sailed by this battleship while heading out on "Tiger Cruise" on board the USS Abraham Lincoln. I always wanted to go see it. I was proud to be on Lincoln...but I'm glad we never had to take on the Mighty Mo. The largest guns ever built on a warship. How's that for OLD SCHOOL ! Dan

Here are some of the archived photos from Missouri's Surrender Deck. They had the actual surrender document too but it didn't photograph very well. Having been to Japan twice, I know from experience that they are the friendliest people you could ever meet. They are now our strongest ally in the Pacific theater. Hey...I kind of like this blogging stuff :-)
